The founder of the ‘House of Design’ took unimaginable lengths to change the world of design itself in the Middle-East.
About Soura Madani
Marriage brought her to the United States, and with it, exposure to design culture was far different than what she learned from the overseas at home. She moved the engrained mindset of architecture, and compartmentalized a new thought process from exterior to interior spaces. With time, she started working alongside internationally renowned names in interior design and furniture, including Barbra Barry and Ralph Lauren, refining her approach to luxury interiors and spatial storytelling for the next 10 years of her life.
In 2009, she returned to Jordan with her family and founded Soura Madani House of Design, a design firm and studio built to merge Middle-Eastern heritage with contemporary global design, a new look to the traditional buildings and spaces of the city of Amman. Her return was a strategy to create a design change in the Middle-Eastern world, to develop something completely new for modern times and traditional norms.
Empathy, resilience, and continuous learning is what carried Madani through this new field of design. Empathy has enveloped her professional and personal morals by listening to clients, to her team, and to the communities that occupy the buildings and spaces she developed globally. Resilience shows up in navigating the complexities of large-scale projects and maintaining steadiness as industry demands keep shifting with time. Learning new tools, new perspectives, and new pressures in the industry all demand attention and patience, as she masters these traits with a smile on her face.

Redefining Design in the Middle-East
Leaving established American brands to found her own architecture and design firm in Jordan remains, by her own account, the hardest stretch of her career. It demanded a leap of faith and strength to read a market she had to relearn. Balancing global design trends against cultural expectations had no structured template for such a transition.
The Royal Hashemite Court awarded SMHD the Bi-Centennial Medal of the Great Arab Revolt for its design work on the AlRaya Palace in Amman. SMHD are also highly recognized for the design of the Rixos Bab Al Bahr Hotel in Dubai, which helped extend the firm’s name across the Gulf States.
Design, in her framing, exists to connect people to their own identity and environment. The true challenges were met with an open heart tend to produce a new type of growth in the world. Leading with integrity and recognizing every individual’s contribution is what allows both people and projects to actually thrive in Madani’s eyes.
Next for SMHD
Human connection inspires Madani more than any milestone ever could. Her years spent living and working across the Middle-East and the United States taught her how design can bridge cultural divides. Emerging designs and designers maintain her curiosity to unimaginable possibilities.
SMHD’s next chapter points more toward the Gulf and international markets, focusing on sustainability, inclusive design, furniture design, and research at the center of expansion. Mentorship remains core to the mission to Madani as she wants emerging designers to step into leadership roles; with her daughter Hanna recently joining SMHD and bringing a fresh perspective into the studio. Collaborations with global brands are deepening as well, aimed at producing spaces that feel culturally intelligent in it’s built environment.
Advice From Her
To all aspiring leaders and to those who have lived “the leap”, Madani advises to treat challenges as growth and to listen to every voice in the room. She says to lead with empathy and integrity, because trust is the actual currency of collaboration, and adaptability is what keeps that trust intact. It is essential to value perspectives that differ from your own, and to remember that leadership’s impact reaches all past and future project’s and shapes the people and communities the work touches.
